.416 Ruger 400 Grain Nosler Partition-Ā TheĀ .416 RugerĀ is a .41 caliber (10.6 x 65.5mm), rimless, bottlenecked cartridge designed as aĀ joint ventureĀ byĀ HornadyĀ andĀ RugerĀ in 2008.Ā Designed to equal the .416 Rigby and .416 Remington magnum, but in a standard length action. The standard length actions are less expensive to manufacture thus making a dangerous game caliber available to a greater amount of customers. The .416 Ruger is suitable for the biggest of land animals and dangerous game.Ā Philip Massaro, the Editor and Chief of Gun Digest Annual and Freelance author said it best, when he stated;Ā ā€œThere isnā€™t a grizzly bear, buffalo of any species or elephant on earth which could tell the difference between the Ruger, Remington or Rigbyā€.Ā

The cartridge is based on theĀ .375 RugerĀ case which was necked up to accept a .416Ā in (10.6Ā mm) bullet. It was designed as aĀ dangerous game cartridgeĀ particularly for use in Alaska and Africa. The .416 Ruger duplicates the performance of theĀ .416 RigbyĀ and theĀ .416 Remington Magnum. All three cartridge fire a 400Ā gr (26Ā g) bullet at 2,400Ā ft/s (730Ā m/s) generating 5,115Ā ftā‹…lbf (6,935Ā J) of energy. However, unlike the Remington or Rigby .416s, the Ruger .416 can be chambered in a standard length action, as the cartridge has a length of 3.34 inches. The cartridge has the same diameter ofĀ belted magnumĀ cases but without the belt. This provides the cartridge a larger propellant capacity than a standard lengthĀ magnum cartridgeĀ of the same length. The rimless design allows for smoother feeding and extraction of the cartridge.

The .416 Ruger is chambered in the bolt-actionĀ Ruger M77 HawkeyeĀ ā€œAfricanā€ and ā€œguide gunā€ rifles, andĀ KrieghoffĀ rifles. No other manufacturer currently chambers this cartridge.

The Bullet

Partition Bullets feature a fully tapered jacket that ruptures instantly at the thin jacket mouth, yet the gradual thickening along the bulletā€™s axis controls expansion and curls the jacket uniformly outward at high or low velocities. Noslerā€™s integral Partition supports the expanded mushroom and retains the rear lead alloy core. The enclosed rear core retains more than half the original bullet weight for deep penetration. The special crimp locks in the rear core section, adding strength to resist deformation under the pressure of heavy magnums.
