Description
7mm PRC 175 Grain Hornady ELD-X-Ā Touted as being āa 21st Century 7mm magnum,ā the PRC is based on a necked-down and shortened 300 PRC case, which in turn is a necked-down 375 Ruger. Whereas the .300 PRC requires a magnum-length action capable of handling cartridges of 3.70 inches COL (Cartridge Overall Length), the new 7mm version will fit a standard .30-06-length action (3.340 inches COL). Ever since the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturersā Institute (SAAMI) published the specs for Hornadyās new 7mm PRC cartridge a few months back, the Internet has been buzzing with speculation. Now that the cartridge has officially launched, itās time to quell the rumors, answer the questions, bust the myths, and provide the facts.Much as it pains me to admit it, the 7mm PRC does just about everything better. Iāve been shooting, handloading for, and hunting with it for more than a half a year now, and Iām sold on it. Letās take a look at just what the 7mm PRC is and does. Fundamentally, itās a standard-length cartridge that fits into .30-06-length actions. However, the 7mm PRCās case is not belted, so itās bigger in diameter than the classic āSeven Mag.ā and holds plenty of gunpowder.
Another critical piece to the 7mm PRC puzzle is fast-twist rifling. Itās specād with a rate of 1 turn every 8 inches. Enabling it to stabilize super long, aerodynamic bullets in every atmospheric condition on the planet. Recoil is zesty in light rifles without muzzle brakes, but not intolerable. With a muzzle brake orābetter yetāsuppressor mounted, itās mild. Although it will never completely replace the grand old 7mm Rem. Mag., and may never overshadow the super-popular 28 Nosler, the 7mm PRC is in my opinion (and on paper) the best 7mm magnum hunting cartridge ever designed. Itās efficient. Itās ultimately compatible with the best extreme-range projectiles on the market, and as a result has unprecedented long-range reach. Itās inherently accurateāobscenely so. It pounds big-bodied game with authority. Itās the ultimate turn-key solution for performance-minded open-country hunters.

The Bullet-
The Heat Shield tip of the Hornady ELD-X bullet defies the effects of aerodynamic heating and retains its shape to provide a perfect meplat (tip) that is always the same shape. A streamlined secant ogive with optimum boattail design, plus the highly concentric AMP bullet jackets, combined with the patent pending Heat Shield tip creates a supremely accurate, high BC match bullet. ELD-Match bullet BCs are measured with Doppler radar and corrected to standard atmospheric conditions. With high velocity, 0-400 yard impact, the bullet continually expands throughout its penetration path. The thick shank of the jacket and high Interlock ring keep the core and jacket together providing 50-60% weight retention. Upon low velocity, 400+ yard impacts, the Heat Shield tip drives backward into the bullet to initiate expansion. Exhibiting conventional expansion with a large mushroom and 85-90% retained weight the bullet provides deep penetration and large wound cavities.
