Description
.270 Winchester Short Magnum 145 Grain Hornady ELD-X~Ā TheĀ 270 Winchester Short MagnumĀ orĀ 270 WSMĀ is a short, unbelted, magnumĀ cartridgeĀ created by necking down theĀ .300 Winchester Short MagnumĀ and fitting it with a .277 caliber bullet. The correct name for the cartridge, as listed by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturersā Institute (SAAMI), is 270 WSM, without a decimal point.Ā When it was introduced, the 300 WSM sported a new case that showed a lot of promise for uses in other calibers. In 2002 Winchester introduced new cartridges in itsĀ Winchester Short MagnumĀ family, including theĀ 7 mm WSMĀ and 270 WSM. This new .270 cartridge was the third commercial .270 ever produced, and the first one in 60 years.
The 270 WSM is an improvement over the olderĀ 270 WinchesterĀ providing higher velocity with bullets of the same weight, and thus a flatter trajectory and more energy. Velocities tend to be about 250Ā ft/s (76Ā m/s) faster, in a cartridge that is shorter and can therefore be used in a shorter action for a more compact rifle if desired.Ā The 270 WSM comes quite close in performance to that of the legendaryĀ .270 Weatherby Magnum. Except that the WSM is chambered in a short action and usually sports a 22ā³ to 24ā³ barrel where the Weatherby is usually chambered in rifles with a 26ā³ barrel.
Choice Ammunition has taken our 100% hand-loading techniques and produce an extremely accurate, highly dependable round for the .270 WSM in this load. Our loading tolerances are only matched by passionate hand-loaders in their own loading rooms. Consistent seating depths, powder charges and proprietary formulas of Choice Ammunition, make this 145 grain Hornady ELD-X round the best you can buy on the commercial market today.
The Bulletā
The Heat Shield tip of the Hornady ELD-X bullet defies the effects of aerodynamic heating and retains its shape to provide a perfect meplat (tip) that is always the same shape. A streamlined secant ogive with optimum boattail design, plus the highly concentric AMP bullet jackets, combined with the patent pending Heat Shield tip creates a supremely accurate, high BC match bullet. ELD-Match bullet BCs are measured with Doppler radar and corrected to standard atmospheric conditions. With high velocity, 0-400 yard impact, the bullet continually expands throughout its penetration path. The thick shank of the jacket and high Interlock ring keep the core and jacket together providing 50-60% weight retention. Upon low velocity, 400+ yard impacts, the Heat Shield tip drives backward into the bullet to initiate expansion. Exhibiting conventional expansion with a large mushroom and 85-90% retained weight the bullet provides deep penetration and large wound cavities.
