7mm Weatherby Magnum 168 grain Berger VLD-H- TheĀ 7mm Remington MagnumĀ was developed among the first line of Weatherby cartridges back in the early 1940s byĀ Roy Weatherby. As other Weatherby Magnum cartridges, the 7mm Wby Mag design is based on theĀ .300 Holland & Holland MagnumĀ case, necked down to .284 caliber, featuring a double radious neck and a straight taper, shortened to be feed from a standard length action, as theĀ .257 Wby MagĀ and theĀ .270 Wby MagĀ do.
The 7mm Weatherby Magnum did not get a lot of exposure until the early part of the 1950s when the Weatherby rifles became more available. The more popularĀ 7mm Remington Magnum, introduced in 1962, has similar ballistics when compared to the 7mm Weatherby.Ā However, being introduced 18 years earlier, the .7mm Weatherby Magnum, due to the case design, delivers a slight edge over the more popular 7mm Rem Mag in terms of ballistics. Additionally, since it is fed from a similar action length as the former, not being handicapped by rifle cost or additional weight.

The Bullet-
The Berger VLDĀ design incorporates a sharp nose that allows the bullet to penetrate 2ā³ to 3ā³ before it starts to expand. After the initial expansion, the bullet will shed between 40% and 85% of its weight as shrapnel into the surrounding tissue (internal organs). The combination between the shrapnel and the hydrostatic shock produces a massive wound cavity within the vital area that will be 13ā³ ā 15ā³ long. This massive wound cavity results in the animal dropping fast since most go into shock after such a tremendous blow. Those animals that donāt go down immediately will soon succumb to blood pressure loss and/or organ failure producing a quick ethical kill.
