Description

.280 Ackley Improved 168 Grain Nosler AccuBond Long Range (ABLR)– The .280 Ackley Improved is one of the most respected and well-balanced hunting cartridges ever developed in the .284 caliber family. Originally based on the .280 Remington, gunsmith and wildcatting pioneer P.O. Ackley refined the case by reducing body taper and sharpening the shoulder to 40 degrees. This design increased powder capacity, improved efficiency, and reduced case stretching—all while allowing shooters to safely fire standard .280 Remington ammunition for fire-forming. Its popularity grew steadily over decades before receiving SAAMI standardization in 2008, cementing its place as a mainstream cartridge.

In the hunting community, the .280 Ackley Improved is prized for its exceptional versatility. It delivers near-magnum performance without magnum recoil, pushing high-BC 7mm bullets at impressive velocities while remaining easy to shoot accurately. The cartridge excels on everything from deer and antelope to elk and moose, offering flat trajectories, excellent wind resistance, and deep, controlled penetration with modern bullet designs.

What truly sets the .280 Ackley Improved apart as a superior .284 caliber is its efficiency. It rivals larger magnums in real-world performance while burning less powder, producing less recoil, and maintaining outstanding barrel life. For hunters seeking reach, precision, and balance, the .280 Ackley Improved is hard to surpass.

Choice Ammunition’s .280 Ackley Improved load with the 168-grain Nosler AccuBond Long Range (ABLR) delivers exceptional long-range accuracy and dependable terminal performance. The 168 ABLR’s high ballistic coefficient and bonded-core construction provide excellent wind resistance, deep penetration, and reliable expansion on large game at extended distances.

Choice Ammunition elevates this combination through precision hand-loading and extensive testing. Each load is tuned specifically for the 168 ABLR, with individually measured powder charges, lot-matched components, and continuous quality control throughout production. This meticulous process reduces velocity variation and enhances repeatable accuracy beyond typical factory ammunition. The result is a balanced, efficient .280 Ackley Improved load that offers confidence, consistency, and superior real-world hunting performance when it matters most.

The Bullet–

The AccuBond Long Range (LR) bullet line was developed in response to the escalating demand from long-range hunters who were asking for a hunting bullet that could keep up with today’s level of high-grade optics and ultra-high velocity cartridges in order to stretch practical shooting yardages past 1,000 yards; yet still perform on big-game animals. In order to accommodate these extreme parameters, the AccuBond-LR bullet was designed to have a minimum impact velocity of 1300fps in order to reliably expand or mushroom at those much longer distances, compared to the 1800fps minimum impact velocity of all other Nosler® hunting bullets.

  • .280 Ackley Improved 145 Grain Barnes Long Range LRX (Lead Free)– The primary difference between the standard .280 Rem. and the .280 Ackley Improved is the steeper 40 degree, which lengthens the case body and allows for about 5 percent more powder capacity. When P.O. Ackley gave the .280 Remington a steep 40-degree shoulder and straightened out most of the cartridge case’s body taper, he likely knew he was on to something special. However, it’s doubtful he anticipated that more than a half-century later, his .280 Ackley Improved cartridge would blossom into a favorite of savvy open-country hunters across the West.

Decades ahead of his time in cartridge design, Ackley became a household name for his work, at least among cartridge enthusiasts. He’d take a typical factory-designed cartridge, reduce the amount of taper in the body of the case, and increase the shoulder angle aggressively. These modifications resulted in added capacity, which increased velocity, and less case stretch, which resulted in longer case life. The .280 AI’s additional case capacity does good things, but it doesn’t change laws of physics. With equal barrel lengths, the Ackley Improved version gets you about 100 additional fps of velocity with a 140-grain bullet and a 24-inch barrel.

Choice Ammunition, and our 100% Hand-Loading techniques- produce a round of ammunition for the .280 Ackley Improved that is demanded in big game hunting. Accuracy, consistency and dependability are crucial at that final moments of your hunt. Choice Ammunition takes this responsibility seriously by meticulously weighing each powder charge with our proprietary formulas and temperature insensitive powders, seating the bullet at the exact length for optimal performance and test firing each and every lot of ammunition at an average of 500% over industry average. We have no high speed production machines- only passionate and dedicated load technicians pulling each and every handle, producing one round of ammunition at a time.

    The Bullet-

The Long-Range X Bullet (LRX) line is designed after the best-selling Tipped Triple-Shock X Bullet, the LRX bullet design increases Ballistic Coefficient values by increasing ogive and boat tail lengths to improve the bullets’ long-range ballistic performance. For the hunter who is confident in long-range hunting, the LRX will fill the niche of this new hunting craze. LRX bullets will continue to be manufactured with the proven 100-percent copper, lead-free bodies. The bullet’s polymer tip initiates expansion, causing the nose cavity to open instantly on contact doubling the bullet’s original diameter while creating four cutting petals that wreak extensive internal damage. Exceptional performance means clean, quick kill.

    The Bullet:

Since its introduction in 2003, Barnes’ TSX Bullet has earned a reputation as “the perfect hunting bullet.” This lead-free, 100% copper-constructed bullet provides extreme penetration every time. Typically, this premium hunting bullet retains 100% of its original weight even after smashing through dense tissue and heavy bone. The Triple – Shock bullet design incorporates a series of precisely positioned rings cut into the bullet’s body. These grooves relieve firing pressure, allowing the TSX to be safely loaded to higher velocities while reducing copper fouling. The bonus is that this is one of the most accurate hunting bullets you can buy.

    The Bullet-

The Berger VLD design incorporates a sharp nose that allows the bullet to penetrate 2″ to 3″ before it starts to expand. After the initial expansion, the bullet will shed between 40% and 85% of its weight as shrapnel into the surrounding tissue (internal organs). The combination between the shrapnel and the hydrostatic shock produces a massive wound cavity within the vital area that will be 13″ – 15″ long. This massive wound cavity results in the animal dropping fast since most go into shock after such a tremendous blow. Those animals that don’t go down immediately will soon succumb to blood pressure loss and/or organ failure producing a quick ethical kill.

    The Bullet-

    100-PERCENT COPPER BODY

Since its introduction in 2003, Barnes’ TSX Bullet has earned a reputation as “the perfect hunting bullet.” Now, Barnes has improved on perfection by adding a streamlined polymer tip. The new Tipped TSX features the same 100-percent copper body with multiple rings cut into the shank. It delivers the same gnat’s-eyelash accuracy and “dead right there” performance—but with an added polymer tip that boosts BC and improves long-range ballistics. The tip and a re-engineered nose cavity provide even faster expansion. Complete penetration, virtually 100-percent weight retention and four razor-sharp cutting petals that double bullet diameter means the new Tipped TSX creates more internal damage than any competing bullet. Instant expansion and perfect penetration ensures cleaner, quicker kills.
