.38-55 Winchester 245 grain RNFP Hi-Tek Coated lead bullet- The .38-55 Winchester cartridge (actually .3775 caliber), also known as the .38-55 WCF and the .38-55 Ballard. It was based on an earlier cartridge called the .38-50 Ballard Everlasting that was introduced in 1876 by the Ballard Rifle & Cartridge Company. The .38-55 Winchester is also the parent case for the .30-30 Winchester.32 Winchester Special, and the .375 Winchester cartridges. The .38-55 Winchester is one of the most enduring and historically significant American rifle cartridges, introduced in 1884 alongside the Winchester Model 1885. Originally developed as a black powder round, it quickly earned a reputation for excellent accuracy, mild recoil, and dependable performance. In the late 19th century, the .38-55 was widely used by hunters, settlers, and competitive marksmen, excelling in single-shot and lever-action rifles. It proved highly effective on deer, elk, and black bear at typical frontier distances, and it became a favorite in early target and Schuetzen competition due to its inherent precision. Winchester continued to use the round in various rifles until about 1940, and also used it in a few commemorative editions of rifles since then. Today, the .38-55 Winchester enjoys a strong revival among traditional hunters, black powder cartridge shooters, and Cowboy Action and vintage rifle enthusiasts.

Choice Ammunition proudly loads the .38-55 Winchester in our Range Loads using our in-house Chey-Cast 245-grain Hi-Tek coated bullet, blending historic performance with modern consistency. Each round is hand-loaded to deliver smooth function, excellent accuracy, and reduced barrel fouling—ideal for extended range sessions and vintage rifle use. Our Hi-Tek coating minimizes leading while maintaining traditional velocities and recoil characteristics true to the cartridge’s heritage. Every lot is carefully monitored for uniform powder charges and overall consistency, ensuring dependable performance shot after shot. The result is a clean-shooting, accurate .38-55 load that honors the past while benefiting from modern hand-loading standards. We do not recommend this ammunition for antique, black powder firearms. See our Cowboy Choice load for this application with velocity of 1,000 fps.

The Bullet:

For these bullets, we use the unique heat-set “HI-TEK Super Coating”. The Coating Totally encapsulates the lead projectiles and replaces standard wax lube. Our bullets are Hard Cast at 22 Brinell. This coating molecularly bonds to the lead, encasing the entire projectile in a protective shell that is self-lubricating. This proprietary coating contains no PTFE or Moly.

  • .32-20 Winchester, also known as the .32 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) 115 RN Grain Hi-Tek Coated Range/Hunting Rounds- The .32-20 Winchester, also known as .32 WCF (Winchester center fire), was the first small-game lever-action cartridge that Winchester produced. It was initially introduced as a black-powder cartridge in 1882 for small-game, varmint hunting, and deer.

It then took Colt about five years to chamber its SAA in .32-20 WCF. Still later, it would chamber its double-action Frontier, Army Special and Police Positive revolvers in .32-20 WCF. Not to be outdone, Smith & Wesson chambered its .32-20 WCF Hand Ejector First Model in the Winchester cartridge. Martini chambered its single-shot Cadet rifle in .32-20 for use as a trainer and target rifle. Remington chambered its Model 25 and 25A rifles in .32-20 WCF from 1923 until 1935. With that, the .32-20 WCF remained popular throughout the first quarter of the 20th century.

The name .32-20 refers to the 32 caliber bullet of .312-inch-diameter (7.9 mm) and standard black-powder charge of 20 grains. It was basically a general purpose, shoot food for the pot type cartridge, similar to the 25-20 WCF or 30-30 WCF.

This cartridge was sometimes used for deer hunting in the past, and William Lyman, the designer of rifle sights, said of it: “For large game, of course, a .32-20 W.C.F. cartridge is rather small, but it comes nearer to being an all-around cartridge in my opinion than any other. Many now consider it too light and low-powered for deer and better suited to small game and metallic silhouette. It has a good reputation for accuracy in rifles as well as the few handguns that have been chambered for it. Because of its low power, it destroys very little meat, making it a good hunting round for appropriately sized game, up to about 100 yards.

We feel our 100% hand-loading techniques and proprietary formulas produce the most reliable, consistent and accurate round on the commercial market today. Choice Ammunition emulates the same process passionate loaders do in their own loading rooms across the country. Hand-Loaded ammunition simply performs better than “factory” ammunition for a number of reasons. Why compromise with this hand gun Range/Game Load when a premium product such as this is available competitively priced? Please try Choice Ammunition! This 115 grain (16 BHN) hard cast lead bullet is designed for great time at the range and is an accurate, fun round to shoot, It is also a very good hunting round with good penetration and terminal performance for deer and smaller game animals.
