.45-70 Government 350 Grain Swift A-Frame~The .45-70 Government: An American Legend That Endures
Introduced in 1873, the .45-70 Government is one of America’s most iconic and enduring rifle cartridges. Originally developed for the U.S. Army’s Springfield Trapdoor rifle, its designation referred to a .45-caliber bullet propelled by 70 grains of black powder. It quickly earned a reputation for reliability, substantial stopping power, and effectiveness across the rugged American frontier.
Beyond military service, the .45-70 became a favorite among hunters, settlers, and outdoorsmen. Its heavy bullets proved highly effective on deer, elk, moose, and bison, while rifles chambered in .45-70 became synonymous with the American West.
More than 150 years later, the .45-70 remains remarkably popular. Modern ammunition and strong contemporary firearms have expanded its capabilities, making it a respected choice for hunting large game, including bear, at moderate distances. Its heavy bullets deliver impressive energy and penetration, particularly in timber and brush country where shots are typically closer.
The resurgence of lever-action rifles, especially the Marlin Model 1895 and modern reproductions of historic single-shot rifles, has helped sustain its popularity. Whether carried for hunting, wilderness protection, or the enjoyment of traditional firearms, the .45-70 Government continues to demonstrate why some cartridges never go out of style.
Choice Ammunition takes the legendary .45-70 Government to another level with our premium 350-grain Swift A-Frame offering. Featuring a bonded-core bullet with a controlled-expansion design, the Swift A-Frame is engineered for exceptional weight retention, deep penetration, and dependable terminal performance on large, tough game. Its unique partitioned construction helps maintain bullet integrity while delivering impressive energy transfer, even against heavy bone and dense muscle. Individually hand-loaded with premium components and subjected to our rigorous quality-control standards, this ammunition provides the consistency and dependability serious hunters demand. An outstanding choice for elk, moose, bear, and other large North American game.
The Bullet:
Swift A-Frame- For 28 years the Swift A-Frame rifle bullets have set the standard by which all bonded bullets are measured. With its controlled expansion of 2.2x and 95%+ weight retention A-Frame penetrates deep and mushrooms perfectly, making it the choice of hunters for use on any game, anywhere in the world.
