Safari Hunting Ammunition

[vc_row type=”container” padding_top=”” padding_bottom=””][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Safari Ammunition, hand-loaded by our dedicated and talented team here at Choice Ammunition, is designed and developed to handle the varied demands of hunting African big game animals, which can include dangerous game, plains game, small antelope, the big cats and more. Here are some key characteristics we consider important when planning your ammunition needs for an African Safari:

There can be substantial differences in size, body mass, skin thickness and simply how hard it is to knock them down, when it comes to species hunted in Africa. “Safari” intended firearms and ammunition tend to be larger and more powerful than what we typically may use for equivalent sized North American big game.

While our staff can recommend certain calibers and ammunition for your needs while on safari, our best advice is to talk with your Professional Hunter, and get his or her advice on what they recommend. From there, Choice Ammunition will be able to provide this ammunition to you- loaded by hand with our extremely tight loading tolerances and with our premium components.

The end result is that you will be well prepared with an extremely reliable, accurate and consistent round of ammunition for your safari.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”container” padding_top=”” padding_bottom=””][vc_column video_bg=”yes” video_bg_url=”https://vimeo.com/857672475″ width=”1/2″][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/857672475″ align=”center” css=””][vc_tta_tabs color=”black” alignment=”center” active_section=”1″][vc_tta_section title=”TSX” tab_id=”1723648301203-69c3d32c-16e7″][vc_single_image image=”55755″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”SOFT POINT” tab_id=”1723648301211-03a51fa1-c3ee”][vc_single_image image=”55756″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”SAFARI SOLIDS” tab_id=”1723648348923-3e6b84c0-bd8d”][vc_single_image image=”55757″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]Dangerous Game

  1. Bullet Type: The bullets used in our dangerous game safari hunting rounds are designed for deep penetration and controlled expansion. Bullet types include:
    1. Soft-Point (SP): Expands upon impact, ideal for controlled expansion and energy transfer.
    2. Barnes Triple Shock (TSX) Solid Copper Construction: TSX bullets are made entirely from copper, which makes them highly durable and capable of retaining their weight upon impact. This ensures deep penetration and effectiveness against large and tough-skinned game.
    3. Bonded Bullets: The core and jacket are chemically bonded to improve penetration and prevent fragmentation.
    4. Safari Solids: Key characteristics of safari solids include:
  1. Solid Construction: Unlike our soft-point or hollow-point bullets, safari solids are made from a solid metal core (often copper or a copper alloy) without any soft or expanding material. This helps them maintain structural integrity during penetration.
  2. Penetration: Choice Ammunition Safari solids are designed to penetrate deeply into the animal’s body, which is crucial for larger game with tough hides and heavy bone structures.
  3. Accuracy: We design these rounds to be accurate and reliable, ensuring a precise shot and effective performance in challenging conditions.

Safari solids are often used in conjunction with expanding bullets to offer versatility in a variety of hunting situations. We offer the Safari Dangerous game “Combo-Pacs”, that our load team has developed to have the same point of impact between the soft point and matching solid rounds.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”container” padding_top=”” padding_bottom=””][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Plains Game

African Plains Game Hunting refers to hunting various species of game animals that mostly inhabit the open, grassland areas of Africa, typically referred to as the “plains.” This type of hunting focuses on species that are often found in these savanna and grassland environments, as opposed to forested or mountainous regions.

While there are exceptions, most shooting is done at relatively closer ranges, meaning 350 yards or less. We find this preferred by most professional hunters as well. It is no fun to chase a wounded Kudu for three days in thick, thorny habitat, while you could be seeking other species on your list. The odds of finding a wounded animal in some terrain is very difficult. It is not fair to the animal, it can be expensive, and it is very disheartening anytime an animal cannot be found.

It is highly recommended to know your firearm and ammunition performance by spending a great deal of time shooting before your safari. Establish a predetermined range you are comfortable shooting to, and make every attempt to stay within that guideline when on safari.

African plains game can still be tough, and very difficult to put down. They also vary greatly in size, from small Duiker species under 10 pounds, to the largest of the antelope family, the Eland, weighing up to a ton. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”container” padding_top=”” padding_bottom=””][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”55759″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_single_image image=”55758″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””]

  • Shot Placement: Regardless of caliber or bullet type, precise shot placement is crucial for a quick, humane kill. Keep in mind the vitals of African animals are further forward, directly underneath the point of their shoulder, unlike North American game animals where you aim in the crease, an inch or two behind the front shoulder!
  • Game Size: Tailor your rifle and our ammunition to the size of the game species that you are hunting. Lighter calibers are suitable for smaller antelope, while heavier calibers are better for larger species. In our opinion, there is nothing wrong with being “over-gunned” when hunting plains game in Africa. Our bullet selections of Nosler, Berger, Barnes, Swift and Hornady (and more) are perfectly suited for your African plains game hunt. Again, check with your PH as to the specific recommendations they may have.

We also make Safari Solids for the .300 Winchester Magnum, and not just the .375, .416, and .458 calibers! Why? Because these bullets are ideal for small bodied and thin skinned animals such as Serval, jackal and “tiny ten” size antelope like Klipspringer, duiker and Grysbok, and will not damage the hides and capes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”container” padding_top=”” padding_bottom=””][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]So, if you are headed to Africa for the first time- or if the Africa bug bit you 20 trips ago- we would be grateful to be a part of your African Safari.
