7MM WINCHESTER SHORT MAGNUM 150 grain Barnes TTSX~ The 270 Winchester Short Magnum or 270 WSM is a short, unbelted, magnum cartridge created by necking down the .300 Winchester Short Magnum and fitting it with a .277 caliber bullet. The correct name for the cartridge, as listed by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI), is 270 WSM, without a decimal point. When it was introduced, the 300 WSM sported a new case that showed a lot of promise for uses in other calibers. In 2002 Winchester introduced new cartridges in its Winchester Short Magnum family, including the 7 mm WSM and 270 WSM. This new .270 cartridge was the third commercial .270 ever produced, and the first one in 60 years.

The 270 WSM is an improvement over the older 270 Winchester providing higher velocity with bullets of the same weight, and thus a flatter trajectory and more energy. Velocities tend to be about 250 ft/s (76 m/s) faster, in a cartridge that is shorter and can therefore be used in a shorter action for a more compact rifle if desired. The 270 WSM comes quite close in performance to that of the legendary .270 Weatherby Magnum. Except that the WSM is chambered in a short action and usually sports a 22″ to 24″ barrel where the Weatherby is usually chambered in rifles with a 26″ barrel.

Our 100% Hand-Loaded .270 WSM Barnes TTSX rounds are loaded with extremely tight tolerances, producing highly accurate, consistent and reliable performance with each and every shot! We feel our proprietary load formulas and loading process create the finest round of ammunition available on the commercial market today. If you don’t load your own ammunition- let us do it for you!

The Bullet:

Since its introduction in 2003, Barnes’ TSX Bullet has earned a reputation as “the perfect hunting bullet.” Now, Barnes has improved on perfection by adding a streamlined polymer tip. The new Tipped TSX features the same 100-percent copper body with multiple rings cut into the shank. It delivers the same gnat’s-eyelash accuracy and “dead right there” performance—but with an added polymer tip that boosts BC and improves long-range ballistics. The tip and a re-engineered nose cavity provide even faster expansion. Complete penetration, virtually 100-percent weight retention and four razor-sharp cutting petals that double bullet diameter means the new Tipped TSX creates more internal damage than any competing bullet. Instant expansion and perfect penetration ensures cleaner, quicker kills.

  • 7MM Winchester Short Magnum (WSM)140 grain Nosler Accubond- The 7mm Winchester Short Magnum is a twenty-eight caliber centerfire rifle cartridge developed in partnership with Browning Arms Company and Winchester, making its debut and introduced to the shooting public in 2001. The new 7mm short magnum cartridge is chambered in Winchester’s Model 70 bolt action rifle. The 7mm WSM is a commercial cartridge based on the 404 jeffery cartridge case, shortening to 2.100″ and necking down to .284″ caliber and sharpening the shoulder angle to 35 degrees. The 7mm WSM cartridge achieves its useful purpose as an excellent long range cartridge for, mule deer, sheep, black bear and elk, .284″ caliber is a time proven caliber for elk and deer size game animals.

The 7mm WSM cartridge is a well thought out cartridge as Winchester is no stranger in .284″ caliber cartridge development. Winchester has now developed 2 cartridges in this caliber; (284 Winchester in 1963), and (7mm WSM in 2001). The 7mm WSM factory loadings show a velocity of 3,250 feet per second for a 140 grain bullet for deer and sheep hunting and this translates to moderate recoil for the shooter with plenty of bullet energy at the 500 yard mark to flatten a larger deer size animal.

The 7mm WSM cartridge, chambered in a short actioned light-weight rifle may well be the ultimate combination for a superb mountain rifle, that offers a slight increase in bullet frontal mass and energy than that offered by the 270 WSM in rugged terrain and most rifles chambered in this cartridge show plenty of accuracy with long range 160 grain weight bullets.

Choice Ammunition has taken our 100% hand-loading techniques and produce an extremely accurate, highly dependable round for the 7mm Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) in this load. Our loading tolerances are only matched by passionate hand-loaders in their own loading rooms. Consistent seating depths, powder charges and proprietary formulas of Choice Ammunition, make this 150 grain Nosler Partition round the best you can buy on the commercial market today.

Partition Bullets feature a fully tapered jacket that ruptures instantly at the thin jacket mouth, yet the gradual thickening along the bullet’s axis controls expansion and curls the jacket uniformly outward at high or low velocities. This makes this round no match for Deer, Sheep, Pronghorn and Black Bear and other medium-sized game.

    The Bullet-

    Image result for eld-x bullets

The Heat Shield tip of the Hornady ELD-X bullet defies the effects of aerodynamic heating and retains its shape to provide a perfect meplat (tip) that is always the same shape. A streamlined secant ogive with optimum boattail design, plus the highly concentric AMP bullet jackets, combined with the patent pending Heat Shield tip creates a supremely accurate, high BC match bullet. ELD-Match bullet BCs are measured with Doppler radar and corrected to standard atmospheric conditions. With high velocity, 0-400 yard impact, the bullet continually expands throughout its penetration path. The thick shank of the jacket and high Interlock ring keep the core and jacket together providing 50-60% weight retention. Upon low velocity, 400+ yard impacts, the Heat Shield tip drives backward into the bullet to initiate expansion. Exhibiting conventional expansion with a large mushroom and 85-90% retained weight the bullet provides deep penetration and large wound cavities.

    The Bullet-

The Berger VLD Hunting bullet line features Very Low Drag (VLD) bullets that have the highest possible ballistic coefficient designed for 300 yards or more, the design incorporates a sharp nose that allows the bullet to penetrate 2″ to 3″ before it starts to expand. After the initial expansion, the bullet will shed between 40% and 85% of its weight as shrapnel into the surrounding tissue (internal organs). The combination between the shrapnel and the hydrostatic shock produces a massive wound cavity within the vital area that will be 13″ – 15″ long. This massive wound cavity results in the animal dropping fast since most go into shock after such a tremendous blow. Those animals that don’t go down immediately will soon succumb to blood pressure loss and/or organ failure producing a quick ethical kill.
