10MM 220 Grain Wide Flat Nose Hard Cast Bear Defense- The 10mm Auto (10×25mm) is a powerful semi-automatic pistol cartridge first developed by American Jeff Cooper and introduced in 1983 with the Bren Ten pistol.

Although it was selected for service by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1989 from the aftermath of the 1986 FBI Miami shootout, the cartridge was later decommissioned (except by the Hostage Rescue Team and Special Weapons and Tactics Teams) after their Firearms Training Unit eventually concluded that its recoil was excessive in terms of training for average agents and police officers’ competency of use and qualification, and that the pistols chambered for the cartridge were too large for some small-handed individuals.

These issues led to the creation of and following replacement by a shorter version of the 10mm that exists today as the .40 S&W, and while the 10mm never attained the mainstream success of this compact variant, there is still an enthusiastic group of supporters and users.

At full potential, the 10mm Auto produces energy slightly higher than an average .357 Magnum load and below standard .41 Magnum rounds. The cartridge is considered to be high-velocity, giving it a less-curved flight path upon firing (also termed “flat-shooting”) relative to other handgun cartridges. In its lighter loadings, the 10mm Auto is an exact duplicate of the .40 S&W cartridge. More powerful loadings can equal or exceed the performance of the .357 Magnum, and retain more kinetic energy at 100 yards than the .45 ACP has at the muzzle.

The 10mm outperforms the .40 S&W by 270–300 ft/s (82–91 m/s) for similar bullet weights when using available full power loads, as opposed to the “10mm FBI” level loads still found in some ammunition catalogs. This result is due to the 10mm Auto’s higher SAAMI pressure rating of 37,500 psi (259 MPa), as opposed to 35,000 psi (240 MPa) for the .40 S&W, and the larger case capacity, which allows the use of heavier bullets and more smokeless powder. The 10mm Auto is marketed for hunting, defensive, and tactical use and is one of the few semi-automatic, rimless cartridges that is legal for hunting white-tailed deer in many U.S. states. The round makes the “Major” power factor ranking in the International Practical Shooting Confederation, even in lighter loadings.

We feel our 100% hand-loading techniques and proprietary formulas produce the most reliable, consistent and accurate round on the commercial market today. Choice Ammunition emulates the same process passionate loaders do in their own loading rooms across the country. Hand-Loaded ammunition simply performs better than “factory” ammunition for a number of reasons. Why compromise with this Bear Defense Load when a premium product such as this is available competitively priced? Please try Choice Ammunition! This 220 grain “HARD” (22 BHN) cast lead bullet is designed for deep penetration and stopping power for the most critical of times.

  • .45 Colt 325 Grain +P Wide Flat Nose (WFN) Gas Check- ** Our hand-loaded cartridges put this round in the same class as the .44 Magnum. These loads cannot be used in any original Colt Single Action Army or replica thereof, such as those produced by Uberti, Beretta, the Taurus Gaucho, or the Ruger New Vaquero, as these guns are built on the smaller frame with thinner cylinder walls. These loads should be used only in modern large-frame revolvers such as the Ruger BlackhawkRedhawk, Ruger’s original Vaquero (sometimes erroneously referred to as the “Old Model” which would differentiate it from the “New Model”, a completely different kind of design change).

.45 Colt loadings can also be safely fired from any gun chambered in either the .454 Casull and .460 S&W Magnum cartridges, though proper feeding may be an issue in repeating rifles chambered for either the .454 or .460 as the OAL is significantly shorter. Modern rifles with strong actions (such as the Winchester Model 1894, Marlin Model 1894, and new clones of the Winchester Model 1892) chambered for the cartridge can safely handle the heavier loadings.

The .45 Colt cartridge, which is sometimes called .45 Long Colt, .45 LC, is a handgun cartridge dating to 1872. It was originally a black-powder revolver round developed for the Colt Single Action Army revolver. This cartridge was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1873 and served as an official US military handgun cartridge for 14 years. While it is sometimes referred to as .45 Long Colt or .45 LC, to differentiate it from the very popular and ubiquitous .45 ACP, and historically, the shorter .45 S&W Schofield, it was only an unofficial designation by Army quartermasters. Current catalog listings of compatible handguns list the caliber as .45 LC and .45 Colt.

The .45 Colt became the basis for the much more powerful .454 Casull cartridge, with the .454 Casull having a slightly longer case utilizing a small rifle primer in place of the large pistol primer. Any .454 Casull revolver will chamber and fire .45 Colt and .45 Schofield, but not the inverse due to the Casull’s longer case. The .460 S&W Magnum is a longer version of the .454 Casull and the .45 Colt. Likewise, .460 Magnum revolvers can chamber and fire the three lesser cartridges, but again, not the reverse.

    The Bullet-

Our Hard Cast Lead bullet for the .45 Colt +P Bear Defense load is a gas check 325 grain Wide Flat Nose (WFN). This cast bullet is perfectly suited for hard hitting and massive terminal penetration and stopping power. Choice Ammunition, and our 100% Hand-Loading techniques- produce a round of ammunition for the .45 Colt in a +P round**(see first paragraph) that is demanded in dangerous game and defense applications.

Accuracy, consistency and dependability are crucial at that final moments of such an endeavor. Choice Ammunition takes this responsibility seriously by meticulously weighing each powder charge with our proprietary formulas and temperature insensitive powders, seating the bullet at the exact length for optimal performance and test firing each and every lot of ammunition at an average of 500% over industry average. We have no high speed production machines- only passionate and dedicated load technicians pulling each and every handle, producing one round of ammunition at a time.

Thank you for visiting Choice Ammunition!Home of Premium Ammunition- 100% Hand-Loaded in Western Montana.

As you may know, the ammunition and firearms industry is experiencing unprecedented times beginning with COVID 19 coming from China in early 2020. Some talked of defunding police departments about the same time, even as riots and lawlessness raged on in our cities with unrest. We then saw a very contentious presidential campaign and ultimately- an inauguration of what could be a very unfriendly 2nd Amendment administration controlling both houses of Congress. For these reasons and more, we see demand at all time highs in the industry, in addition to mass shortages of components. I personally do not see things changing any time soon either...

With this, we are doing everything possible to hand-load and get products shipped in a timely manner, but we cannot simply turn machines up like others! Any back-orders on this website that we allow, we feel will ship in a reasonable period of time and we are averaging about 2-3 weeks presently. However, we are reliant on our suppliers to deliver components to us also, and that can unexpectedly be delayed on occasion. When this happens, it is possible to see 30-60 days, and sometimes more- to get ammunition sent out to you. Please know, all backorders will be filled at the price you purchased the ammunition for. If you find something elsewhere- we are happy to cancel any order.

We try to answer all office calls and prefer calls over emails or social media. We ask you to please refrain from calling or changing your order unless it is absolutely necessary- keeping in mind the time-frames I mentioned above. Every call we answer removes the focus on sourcing components and loading/shipping your ammunition!  We promise to get your order out as soon as we possibly can- yet, ask that you please understand this crazy market we are all in- if indeed you are delayed!

We do not believe in price gouging or increasing margins in a market such as this- and we will do everything possible to remain competitive with “factory” ammo, while providing our premium hand-loaded ammunition to the market. It does appear that prices may increase this year however, as there is much volatility in pricing for our brass, bullets, powder and primers.

Thank you for considering Choice Ammunition if you are a new customer- and thank you for another order if you are returning. We truly appreciate all of you and have built our business from going the extra mile with our products and for our customers!
