  • .348 Winchester 200 Grain Hawk Flat Point- The .348 Winchester was introduced in 1936 in the Winchester Model 71 lever action rifle. The .348 cartridge was a modernized replacement for the old .33 Winchester and .35 Winchester cartridges and the Model 71 was essentially an improved Model 1886 rifle. The .348 was one of the most powerful rimmed rounds ever used in a lever action rifle. The Model 71/.348 combination was eventually replaced in the Winchester line by the Model 88 lever action in the ballistically identical .358 Win. caliber. It is excellent for any North American big game in woods or brush, if the 200-220 grain bullet is used, but not especially suited to long range (300 yards and beyond) as a result of the need to use flat-nose slugs due to the Model 71’s tubular magazine.

No other rifle was ever offered in .348 by Winchester (although Uberti has made some 400 rifles chambered for the .348 in the Cimarron 1885 Hi-Wall in 2005-06), and it has been supplanted by the .358 Winchester (in the Model 88). (The Model 71 was discontinued in 1958.) The .348 is also the basis for the .348 Ackley Improved, The .348 Ackley improved has about a 200 fps advantage over the standard. The .348 also served as the basis for the .50 Alaskan and .500 Linebaugh cartridges.

    The Bullet:

The .348 Winchester and the Model 71 are some of the most popular leverguns ever made. The Hawk flat point closely resembles the original Winchester bullet. Our selection of standard bullets lets you hunt deer with the thinner jacketed bullets and anything else in North America with the .035” jacket bullets.

Hawk Bullets is the original developer and producer of “SOFT”™ copper jacketed hunting bullets. We began doing research on hunting bullet design in 1987, and soon learned that even with the additional production difficulties and added cost, the soft jacket had several advantages, and is well worth the extra work.

Most hunters pay little regard to bullet selection, focusing instead on greater muzzle velocities, how awesome the loaded round appears, the name on the rifle, etc. But it’s the bullet that kills game. Few accept the fact that a hunt’s final results rest on a few cents worth of lead and gilding metal.

The perfect bullet should expand soon after entering and retain a mushroom shape throughout the entire animal. In addition to the damage caused from the bullet’s path, a properly mushroomed bullet will reverberate a hydro-shock extending out to other tissue and organs. Our “soft”™ jackets stay together, even with 3 diameters of expansion. They stretch and flow to support the mushrooming lead core, keeping the bullet intact even in extreme deformation or expansion. “Soft”™ jacket bullets expand to 2-3 diameters, thus producing larger wound channels and more one-shot hunts, yet they retain 80-95% of their original weight to punch deep into their target.

    The Bullet:

Swift A-Frame fans, here you go! For 28 years A-Frame rifle bullets have set the standard by which all bonded bullets are measured. With its controlled expansion of 2.2x and 95%+ weight retention A-Frame penetrates deep and mushrooms perfectly, making it the choice of hunters for use on any game, anywhere in the world. A-Frame bullet Lever Action bullet is reconfigured for the velocity windows of various lever-action rifle cartridges. Like the other A-Frames, front and rear lead cores are separated by an integral partition with the front core bonded to a thick copper jacket. Called the Lever Action Series, all have flat-nose profiles. The A-Frame’s construction allows Swift to design a bullet for low-velocity expansion on soft targets, such as deer or bear, without sacrificing penetration on larger game.
