  • 32 H&R Magnum 85 Grain Hornady XTP- The .32 H&R Magnum is a rimmed cartridge designed for use in revolvers. It was developed in 1984 as a joint venture between Harrington & Richardson and Federal Premium Ammunition. The .32 H&R Magnum is produced by lengthening the .32 S&W Long case by .155″, to 1.075″. The .32 H&R Magnum offers substantially more performance than most other .32 caliber handgun cartridges, such as the .32 ACP, and is considered an effective small-game hunting cartridge. Its higher velocity offers a flat trajectory, while the light weight of the bullet results in low recoil. The older .32-20 Winchester was extremely popular in the Winchester lever- and Colt single-actions, available at the turn of the century, for small-to-medium game hunting. The .32 H&R offers near duplicate performance.

Since the .32 H&R Magnum headspaces on the rim and shares the rim dimensions and case and bullet diameters of the shorter .32 S&W and .32 S&W Long cartridges, these shorter cartridges may be safely fired in arms chambered for the .32 H&R Magnum. However, the longer, more powerful .32 H&R Magnum cartridges can not be safely fired in arms designed for the .32 S&W or .32 S&W Long.

We load each round of the 32 H&R individually, with the same passion and dedication only found in individual loading rooms and benches across the country.  This loading process by Choice Ammunition, along with this Hornady XTP bullet will provide you with a round of ammunition you can count on with “uncompromised Precision” and “Uncompromised Reliability”.

  • .357 Magnum 125 Grain Hornady XTP~ Hornady XTP Bullets feature a performance-improved point that has 6 precise folds to divide the bullet into symmetrical sections and initiate controlled expansion at low velocities while not fragmenting at higher velocities. They expand reliably at a wide range of velocities for a deep, terminal penetration with every shot.

Designed for hunting, self-defense and law enforcement applications, the XTP bullet demonstrates the kind of accuracy that led many competitive shooters to adopt it. Reliable performance makes the XTP the most popular handgun bullet for both target shooters and hunters. But it’s the stopping power of the XTP bullet that has truly built its world-class reputation. From the onset, XTP bullets were specifically designed to expand reliably at a wide range of handgun velocities to deliver deep penetration with every shot.

  • .357 Magnum 140 Grain Barnes XPB (Lead-Free)- The .357 S&W Magnum, or simply .357 Magnum, is a cartridge with a .357-inch bullet diameter. It was created by Elmer Keith, Phillip B. Sharpe, and D. B. Wesson of firearms manufacturers Smith & Wesson and WinchesterIt is based upon Smith & Wesson’s earlier .38 Special cartridge. The .357 Magnum cartridge was introduced in 1934, and its use has since become widespread. This cartridge started the “Magnum era” of handgun ammunition.

The .357 Magnum cartridge is notable for its highly effective terminal ballistics when used for hunting or defense.

The .38 Special nomenclature relates to the previous use of heeled bullets (such as the .38 Short Colt and .38 Long Colt), which were the same diameter as the case. The only external dimensional difference between .38 Special and .357 magnum is the difference in case length; this was done to prevent accidentally loading a .357 magnum cartridge in to a .38 Special revolver that isn’t designed for the .357 magnum’s higher chamber pressure.

This cartridge is regarded by many as an excellent hunting, metallic silhouette and self-defense round. With this load, it is effective against large or dangerous game, such as bear, however, many consider the larger and more powerful magnum cartridges to be more appropriate such as the .500 S&W Magnum460 S&W Magnum.44 Magnum.454 Casull.41 Magnum as well as other larger magnum rounds. Please look at our Choice Bear Defense rounds in these calibers as well.

Choice Ammunition, and our 100% Hand-Loading techniques- produce a round of ammunition for the .357 Magnum that is demanded for big game hunting. Accuracy, consistency and dependability are crucial at that final moments of such an encounter. Choice Ammunition takes this responsibility seriously by meticulously weighing each powder charge with our proprietary formulas and temperature insensitive powders, seating the bullet at the exact length for optimal performance and test firing each and every lot of ammunition at an average of 500% over industry average. We have no high speed production machines- only passionate and dedicated load technicians pulling each and every handle, producing one round of ammunition at a time.

    The Bullet~

    ALL COPPER, LEAD-FREE, X-BULLET™ TECHNOLOGY

Featuring Barnes’ patented X-Bullet™ technology, all-copper XPB™ bullets offer dramatically increased penetration over conventional jacketed lead-core bullets. These lead-free bullets provide superior expansion and weight retention. Energy transfer is unsurpassed, making them ideal for hunting or self-defense. Barnes’ XPB bullets are exceptionally accurate and leave no residue to harm shooters in practice environments.

  • .357 180 Grain Hornady XTP Defense Ammunition- The .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum, .357 S&W Magnum, .357 Magnum, or 9×33mmR as it is known in unofficial metric designation, is a smokeless powder cartridge with a .357-inch (9.07 mm) bullet diameter. It was created by Elmer Keith, Phillip B. Sharpe, and Douglas B. Wesson of firearm manufacturers Smith & Wesson and Winchester. The .357 Magnum cartridge is notable for its highly effective terminal ballistics.

The .357 Magnum cartridge is based upon Smith & Wesson’s earlier .38 Special cartridge. It was introduced in 1935, and its use has since become widespread. This cartridge began the “Magnum era” of handgun ammunition. The “Magnum era” began with the .375 H&H rifle cartridge, spreading to handguns with the .357 Magnum.

Though .38 Special and .357 Magnum would seem to be different diameter chamberings, they are in fact identical, as at 0.357 inches (9.07 mm) they both have the same bullet diameter. The .38 Special nomenclature relates to the previous use of heeled bullets (such as the .38 Short Colt and .38 Long Colt), which were the same diameter as the case. The only external dimensional difference between .38 Special and .357 magnum is the difference in case length; this was done to prevent accidentally loading a .357 magnum cartridge in to a .38 Special revolver that is not designed for the .357 magnum’s higher chamber pressure. Case volume was not a factor in the increase in case length as the .38 Special cartridge was originally a black powder cartridge, and the .357 magnum was developed using only much denser smokeless powder.

Much credit for the .357’s early development is given to hunter and experimenter Elmer Keith. Keith’s early work in loading the .38 Special to increasingly higher-pressure levels was made possible by the availability of heavy, target-shooting-oriented revolvers like the Smith & Wesson .38-44 “Heavy Duty” and “Outdoorsman”, .38-caliber revolvers built on .44-caliber frames.

This cartridge is regarded by many as an excellent hunting, metallic silhouette and self-defense round.

  • .38 Special 125 Grain Black Hi-Tek Coated RNFP- The .38 Smith & Wesson Special  is a rimmed, centerfire cartridge designed by Smith & Wesson. It is most commonly used in revolvers, although some semi-automatic pistols and carbines also use this round. The .38 Special was the standard service cartridge of most police departments in the United States from the 1920s to the 1990s, and was also a common sidearm cartridge used by soldiers in World War I. Known for its accuracy and manageable recoil, the .38 Special remains one of the most popular revolver cartridges in the world more than a century after its introduction. It is used for target shooting, formal target competition, personal defense, and for hunting small game.

The .38 Special was introduced in 1898 as an improvement over the .38 Long Colt which, as a military service cartridge, was found to have inadequate stopping power against the charges of Filipino Muslim warriors during the Philippine–American War. Upon its introduction, the .38 Special was originally loaded with black powder, but the cartridge’s popularity caused manufacturers to offer smokeless powder loadings within a year of its introduction.

Despite its name, the caliber of the .38 Special cartridge is actually .357 inches (36 caliber/9.07 mm), with the “.38” referring to the approximate diameter of the loaded brass case. Except for case length, the .38 Special is identical to the .38 Short Colt.38 Long Colt, and .357 Magnum. This allows the .38 Special round to be safely fired in revolvers chambered for the .357 Magnum, and the .38 Long Colt in revolvers chambered for .38 Special, increasing the versatility of this cartridge. However, the longer and more powerful .357 Magnum cartridge will usually not chamber and fire in weapons rated specifically for .38 Special which are not designed for the greatly increased pressure of the magnum rounds.

Although only a few US police departments now issue or authorize use of the .38 Special revolver as a standard duty weapon, the caliber remains popular with some police officers for use in short-barreled revolvers carried when off-duty or for undercover police investigations. It is also widely used in revolvers purchased for civilian home defense or for concealed carry by individuals with a CCW permit.

With our 100% hand-loading techniques- We place the same care and passion into each and every round produced as those do in their own private loading rooms. These techniques produce the most reliable, accurate round of ammunition available on the market today!

  • .38 Special 125 Grain Hornady XTP~ Hornady XTP Bullets feature a performance-improved point that has 6 precise folds to divide the bullet into symmetrical sections and initiate controlled expansion at low velocities while not fragmenting at higher velocities.

    • Velocity 920 FPS
    • 100% hand loaded with superior quality and performance

    Product Features

    CONTROLLED EXPANSION

Precise serrations divide the XTP® into symmetrical sections, strategically weakening the jacket and initiating controlled expansion even at low velocities.

    NO EXPOSED LEAD

The gilding metal jacket protects the nose of the bullet, so the hollow cavity functions properly on impact and ensures proper feeding in semi-automatics.

    SWAGED CORE

Total uniformity of core density ensures balanced expansion as well as in-flight stability.

    DRAWN GILDING METAL JACKET

Expansion is controlled by varying jacket thickness down the length of the XTP, providing a definite advantage over plated bullets which have a uniform jacket thickness over the entire bullet.

These high-performance rounds provide excellent reliability, consistency, accuracy, penetration and stopping power for personal protection.

  • .38 Special 148 grain Hi-Tek Coated Wadcutter- Target shooters, here is a great round for you! Unlike a normal bullet that tapers down to a point, a wadcutter has an entirely flat front as wide as the cartridge. In other words, the round is completely cylindrical. Who will use such a bullet? Competitive shooters. Normal bullets make holes that can be tough to differentiate when you score a paper target that has a number of shots put through it. Wadcutters were designed to punch distinct circular holes in paper targets, making life a lot easier when determining who wins a competitive shooting match.

With our 100% hand-loading techniques- We place the same care and passion into each and every round produced as those do in their own private loading rooms. These techniques produce the most reliable, accurate round of ammunition available on the market today!

The .38 Special was designed in 1898 to be a higher velocity round, with better penetration properties than the .38 Long Colt that was in Government Service in the Philippines during the Spanish–American War. The .38 Long Colt revolver round wouldn’t penetrate the insurgent Philippine Morro warrior shields, and the Government contracted the new revolver round to Smith & Wesson.

Except for case length, the .38 Special is identical to the .38 Short Colt, .38 Long Colt, and .357 Magnum. This allows the .38 Special round to be safely fired in revolvers chambered for the .357 Magnum, and the .38 Long Colt in revolvers chambered for .38 Special, increasing the versatility of this cartridge.

  • .38 Special 158 Grain Black Hi-Tek Coated RNFP- The .38 Smith & Wesson Special  is a rimmed, centerfire cartridge designed by Smith & Wesson.

  • .380 Auto 102 Grain JHP- The .380 ACP cartridge was developed by John Browning and introduced in 1908 by Colt, which chambered this round in small pocket pistols that quickly gained popularity in undercover police work. Many shooters have also chosen the .380, because of its pleasant recoil characteristics as compared with the 9mm Luger and its bigger cousins. The .380 can be snappy when shot out of a small-frame pistol and is still much more of a pleasure to shoot than its larger cousins.

While not the least expensive .380 ammunition on the market, our tight loading tolerances, visual inspection and premium performance sets our products apart from other import and “factory” loaded ammunition! For a few cents more, make every shot count!

  • 40 Smith & Wesson 150 grain FMJ– The .40 S&W is a rimless pistol cartridge developed jointly by major American firearms manufacturers Smith & Wesson and Winchester. The .40 S&W was developed from the ground up as a law enforcement cartridge designed to duplicate performance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation‘s (FBI) reduced-velocity 10mm Auto cartridge which could be retrofitted into medium-frame (9mm size) semi-automatic handguns. It uses 0.40-inch (10 mm) diameter bullets ranging in weight from 105 to 200 grains.

The popularity of the .40 S&W accelerated with the passage of the now-expired Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 which prohibited sales of pistol or rifle magazines that could hold more than ten rounds (cartridges), regardless of caliber. Several U.S. states, and a number of local governments, also banned or regulated so-called “high capacity” magazines. As a result, many new firearm buyers limited to purchasing pistols with a maximum magazine capacity of 10 rounds chose pistols in the .40 S&W chambering instead of smaller-diameter cartridges such as the 9x19mm (9mm Luger or 9mm Parabellum).

The .40 S&W case length and overall cartridge length are shortened, but other dimensions except case web and wall thickness remain identical to the 10mm Auto. Both cartridges headspace on the mouth of the case. Thus in a semi-auto they are not interchangeable. Based on ideal terminal ballistic performance in ordnance gelatin during lab testing in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the .40 S&W earned status as “the ideal cartridge for personal defense and law enforcement”. Ballistically the .40 S&W is almost identical to the .38-40 Winchester introduced in 1874, as they share the same bullet diameter and bullet weight, and have similar muzzle velocities. The energy of the .40 S&W exceeds standard-pressure .45 ACP loadings, generating between 350 foot-pounds and 500 foot-pounds of energy, depending on bullet weight. Both the .40 S&W and the 9mm Parabellum operate at a 35,000 pounds per square inch SAAMI maximum, compared to a 21,000 pounds per square inch maximum for .45 ACP.

    The Bullet

The jacketed hollow point (JHP) is designed to expand rapidly when hitting its target, which increases the effectiveness of the bullet and decreases the chances of over-penetration. Jacketed hollow points come in a massive variety, separated by shape, design or simply the company that manufactures them. JHP rounds will feed better than lead nosed hollow points in most weapons that use a magazine, whether it’s a pistol or rifle. The jacket has a much smoother surface, with less variation from bullet to bullet than traditional lead.

Our 40 S&W 150 grain JHP ammunition is second to none. With the tightest loading tolerances in the industry through our proprietary formulas and 100% hand-loading techniques- this round of ammunition is designed for superior accuracy, reliability and consistency when you shoot them over other factory produced rounds on the market. We load each round individually, with the same passion and dedication only found in individual loading rooms and benches across the country.  This loading process by Choice Ammunition, along with this Jacketed Hollow Point bullet- will provide you with a round of ammunition you can count on with “uncompromised Precision” and “Uncompromised Reliability”.

In 1963, Elmer Keith and Bill Jordan, with some help from Skeeter Skelton, petitioned Smith & Wesson, Remington, and Norma to produce a pistol and ammunition in .41 caliber which would fall between the extant .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum cartridges in ballistic performance, and at the same time address perceived shortcomings with those loads. While Keith had suggested a softer .41 Special cartridge as early as 1955, this idea was passed over in favor of the Magnum option, and the Special survives only as a custom wildcat cartridge.

Elmer Keith, Handgun Hunter & Firearm Enthusiast (1899-1984)

The .357 Magnum suffered from restricted terminal ballistic effectiveness in the early 1960s, as jacketed hollow point bullets were not yet commonly available, and the manufacturer’s standard loadings consisted of simple lead bullets. The powerful .44 Magnum, primarily a heavy hunting round, was considered overkill for police use, generating too much recoil for control under rapid fire. In addition, the revolvers chambered for the .44 were considered too large, bulky, and heavy for police carry.

Keith’s original vision called for dual power levels in the .41, a heavy magnum load pushing a 210-grain JHP at a muzzle velocity of 1300–1400 feet per second and a milder police loading which was to send a 200-grain semi-wadcutter downrange at around 900 ft/s. The .41 Magnum never enjoyed the popularity and success of either the .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum cartridges, but is still prized by handgun hunters as some feel it generates somewhat lighter recoil and slightly flatter bullet trajectory at long range than the .44. Nevertheless, the .44 Magnum still catalogs a greater variety of heavier bullet weight offerings which are more effective on larger game, and boasts a slight edge in power. Marshall and Sanow called the .41 Magnum “one of our most unappreciated calibers.”

Choice Ammunition has taken this caliber and once again produced a superior product compared to traditional “factory” rounds available on the market today. Our 100% hand-loading techniques with a proprietary load formula, achieves a muzzle velocity of 1,595 fps in this Defense/Hunting round. The consistencies in powder charge, seating depth and rigorous testing and inspection creates a highly accurate and dependable round of ammunition for when it really counts.

Keith’s original vision called for dual power levels in the .41, a heavy magnum load pushing a 210-grain JHP at a muzzle velocity of 1300–1400 feet per second, and a milder police loading which was to send a 200-grain semi wadcutter downrange at around 900 ft.

These plans went awry due to an ongoing fascination in the firearms community with high-powered cartridges; Remington was swayed by this community’s influence and instead of following Keith’s blueprint chose to emphasize the performance of the new cartridge. As a result, the .41 “Magnum” load was released at an advertised 1500 ft/s, and even the “light” police loading was introduced with a 210 grain lead semi wadcutter “warmed up” to about 1,150 ft/s. Unfortunately, the police load as delivered was regarded as overpowered by most law enforcement agencies, many of whom were still using .38 Special revolvers.

Additionally, Smith & Wesson simply adapted their large N-frame revolvers for the new cartridge, which did not address size and weight concerns. The Model 58, targeted for the law enforcement market, was introduced on July 10, 1964. Weighing in at 41 ounces, the Model 58 compared unfavorably with other popular revolvers available at the time, such as Smith’s own 34 ounce Model 10 in .38 Special

These combined factors mostly eliminated the .41 Magnum from consideration for its intended market as a law enforcement firearm, although it continued to be touted as such and was adopted by a few law enforcement agencies.

Smith & Wesson produced a high-end, premium revolver in .41 Magnum caliber, the Model 57, almost identical to the .44 Magnum-chambered Model 29. Magnum Research’s Desert Eagle division produced a .41 Remington Magnum in their semi-automatic Mark VII.

We feel our 100% hand-loading techniques and proprietary formulas produce the most reliable, consistent and accurate round on the commercial market today. Choice Ammunition emulates the same process passionate loaders do in their own loading rooms across the country. Hand-Loaded ammunition simply performs better than “factory” ammunition for a number of reasons. • .44 Magnum 200 Grain Hornady XTPElmer Keith, championed the concept of higher powered big-bore revolvers with Smith & Wesson and Remington Arms, eventually leading to the development of the .357, .41, and .44 Magnums. Keith’s suggested designation for the proposed .44 caliber round was the “.44 Special Magnum,” but when Remington Arms developed the cartridge they chose to name it the .44 Remington Magnum. Nonetheless, the new cartridge was developed directly from the .44 Special design by simply lengthening the older case by .125 inch. Remington’s stated rationale for the making of this change was to preclude higher pressured Magnum loads from being chambered in .44 Special revolvers.

With our 100% hand-loading techniques- We place the same care and passion into each and every round produced as those do in their own private loading rooms. These techniques produce the most reliable, accurate round of ammunition available on the market today!

    The Bullet-

Hornady XTP Bullets feature a performance-improved point that has 6 precise folds to divide the bullet into symmetrical sections and initiate controlled expansion at low velocities while not fragmenting at higher velocities.

All brass is carefully selected to ensure it meets our unusually high standards for reliable feeding, corrosion resistance, proper hardness and the ability to withstand maximum chamber pressures.

Powders in each cartridge are loaded to ensure optimal pressure, velocity and consistency from lot to lot. Each primer is matched to individual loads and specifically selected for their ability to quickly, completely, and reliably ignite the powder charge.

  • .44 Magnum 225 Grain Barnes XPB (Lead-Free)- The .44 Remington Magnum, or simply .44 Magnum (10.9×33mmR), and frequently .44 Mag, is a rimmed, large-bore cartridge originally designed for revolvers. After its introduction, it was quickly adopted for carbines and rifles. Despite the “.44” designation, guns chambered for the .44 Magnum round, and its parent, the .44 Special, use 0.429 in (10.9 mm) diameter bullets.

The .44 Magnum is based on a lengthened .44 Special case, loaded to higher pressures for greater velocity (and thus, energy). The .44 Magnum has since been eclipsed in power by the .454 Casull, and most recently by the .460 S&W Magnum and .500 S&W Magnum, among others; nevertheless, it has remained one of the most popular commercial large-bore magnum cartridges. When loaded to its maximum and with heavy, deeply penetrating bullets, the .44 Magnum cartridge is suitable for short-range hunting of all North American game—though at the cost of heavy recoil and muzzle flash when fired in handguns, less so in carbines and rifles.

Elmer Keith, one of the most famous and popular firearms related authors at the time, developed a number of classical heavy handloads for the .44 Special; many are still highly regarded today. He also championed the concept of higher powered big-bore revolvers with Smith & Wesson and Remington Arms, eventually leading to the development of the .357.41, and .44 Magnums.

Choice Ammunition, and our 100% Hand-Loading techniques- produce a round of ammunition for the .44 Magnum that is demanded for long-range pistol, big game and dangerous game hunting.

    The Bullet:

Hornady® FTX® bullets revolutionized lever gun ballistics, creating a new level of performance for these popular firearms. Lever gun enthusiasts can now harness the accuracy, power and long-range performance of a tipped bullet that’s safe to load in tubular magazines.

Hornady® offers the same Flex Tip® technology for handguns that revolutionized lever guns. Typical hollow point pistol bullets deliver good performance at modest velocities, but have a tendency to expand too quickly and sacrifice penetration at the higher velocities achieved with lever action guns.

Recently the .44 Special has experienced something of a resurgence, as many firearms enthusiasts have realized that the heavily recoiling Magnum round is really “too much pistol” for many applications, and the heavier and more bulky revolvers in which it is chambered are not as convenient to carry. Another key factor fueling the Special’s comeback is its ability to fit in the longer chambers of the aforementioned .44 Magnum revolvers, much like the .38 special fits in the longer chambers of the .357 Magnum. This makes the .44 Special cartridge an attractive alternative for reduced velocity target shooting and  plinking. The recent popularity of Cowboy Action shooting has also helped pique interest in the .44 Special, motivating manufacturers to offer modern and reproduction firearms chambered for this classic cartridge. From the onset, XTP bullets were specifically designed to expand reliably at a wide range of handgun velocities to deliver deep penetration with every shot.

The .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol), or .45 Auto is a handgun cartridge designed by John Browning in 1905, for use in his prototype Colt semi-automatic pistol. After successful military trials, it was adopted as the standard chambering for Colt’s M1911 pistol, being named .45 ACP. It came to life as a result of unsatisfactory performance of the .38-caliber handgun our Armed Forces were using during the Philippine-American War at the end of the 19th century. Soldiers had noted that the .38 handguns were definitely less effective than the .45 caliber Colt Single Action Army. The Army Ordinance Department agreed, and development of a new sidearm began. Germany’s DWM, and the American firms of Savage and Colt (the Browning design) submitted new designs, with the Colt pistol and cartridge coming out on top. This iconic combination was officially adopted as the M1911, firing “Cal. 45 Automatic Pistol Ball Cartridge, Model of 1911.” The original load centered around a 200-grain bullet at 900 fps, but was revised to the formula we all know, driving a 230-grain round nosed bullet at a muzzle velocity of 850 fps. The .45 ACP was an immediate success, and continues to be so to this day.

  • .45 Auto 200 grain Black Hi-Tek Coated RN- The .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol), or .45 Auto is a handgun cartridge designed by John Browning in 1905, for use in his prototype Colt semi-automatic pistol.

Our coated bullets have become such a hit with our “Cowboy Choice” line, we decided to introduce these tremendously popular bullets into our “Range Choice” lines of ammunition! Our range ammunition is produced with the same loading process as anything we do- 100% Hand-Loaded techniques producing the tightest loading tolerances in the industry, which equates to superior reliability and accuracy!

We use a unique heat-set “HI-TEK Supercoat” manufactured in Australia, where it has been used for more than 20 years. The Hi-Tek Supercoat Bullet Coating totally encapsulates the lead projectiles and replaces standard wax lube.
Hi-Tek Supercoat bullets are safe to shoot indoors.  The coating gives off no toxic out-gassing or particulate matter when fired. The coating is absolutely non abrasive and contains no PTFE or MOLY. There is no wax lube and it minimizes your exposure to lead. The end result is cleaner air, cleaner hands, cleaner equipment and cleaner guns!

  • .45 Auto 200 Grain Hornady XTP- Hornady XTP Bullets feature a performance-improved point that has 6 precise folds to divide the bullet into symmetrical sections and initiate controlled expansion at low velocities while not fragmenting at higher velocities.

    Product Features

    CONTROLLED EXPANSION

Precise serrations divide the XTP into symmetrical sections, strategically weakening the jacket and initiating controlled expansion even at low velocities.

  • .45 Colt 325 Grain +P Wide Flat Nose (WFN) Gas Check- ** Our hand-loaded cartridges put this round in the same class as the .44 Magnum. These loads cannot be used in any original Colt Single Action Army or replica thereof, such as those produced by Uberti, Beretta, the Taurus Gaucho, or the Ruger New Vaquero, as these guns are built on the smaller frame with thinner cylinder walls. These loads should be used only in modern large-frame revolvers such as the Ruger BlackhawkRedhawk, Ruger’s original Vaquero (sometimes erroneously referred to as the “Old Model” which would differentiate it from the “New Model”, a completely different kind of design change).

.45 Colt loadings can also be safely fired from any gun chambered in either the .454 Casull and .460 S&W Magnum cartridges, though proper feeding may be an issue in repeating rifles chambered for either the .454 or .460 as the OAL is significantly shorter. Modern rifles with strong actions (such as the Winchester Model 1894, Marlin Model 1894, and new clones of the Winchester Model 1892) chambered for the cartridge can safely handle the heavier loadings.

The .45 Colt cartridge, which is sometimes called .45 Long Colt, .45 LC, is a handgun cartridge dating to 1872. It was originally a black-powder revolver round developed for the Colt Single Action Army revolver. This cartridge was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1873 and served as an official US military handgun cartridge for 14 years. While it is sometimes referred to as .45 Long Colt or .45 LC, to differentiate it from the very popular and ubiquitous .45 ACP, and historically, the shorter .45 S&W Schofield, it was only an unofficial designation by Army quartermasters. Current catalog listings of compatible handguns list the caliber as .45 LC and .45 Colt.

The .45 Colt became the basis for the much more powerful .454 Casull cartridge, with the .454 Casull having a slightly longer case utilizing a small rifle primer in place of the large pistol primer. Any .454 Casull revolver will chamber and fire .45 Colt and .45 Schofield, but not the inverse due to the Casull’s longer case. The .460 S&W Magnum is a longer version of the .454 Casull and the .45 Colt. Likewise, .460 Magnum revolvers can chamber and fire the three lesser cartridges, but again, not the reverse.

    The Bullet-

Our Hard Cast Lead bullet for the .45 Colt +P Bear Defense load is a gas check 325 grain Wide Flat Nose (WFN). This cast bullet is perfectly suited for hard hitting and massive terminal penetration and stopping power. Choice Ammunition, and our 100% Hand-Loading techniques- produce a round of ammunition for the .45 Colt in a +P round**(see first paragraph) that is demanded in dangerous game and defense applications.

Accuracy, consistency and dependability are crucial at that final moments of such an endeavor.

  • .45 COLT 250 GRAIN HORNADY XTP- The .45 Colt cartridge, which is sometimes called .45 Long Colt, .45 LC, is a handgun cartridge dating to 1872.

    The Bullet-

Whether you punch paper, shoot steel or use your handgun for hunting, Nosler ensures you have the very finest in accuracy, consistency and overall quality. Designed to expand rapidly upon impact, the pure lead core is copper-alloy jacketed for maximum bullet stability and balance while further enhancing accuracy. The bullet’s well-defined cannelure holds the jacket and core together and allows a tight crimp, eliminating bullet movement within the case.

  • .45 Schofield (S&W) 200 Grain RNFP– The .45 Schofield or .45 Smith & Wesson is a revolver cartridge developed by Smith & Wesson for their S&W Model 3 Schofield top-break revolver. It is similar to the .45 Colt round though shorter and with a slightly larger rim, and will generally work in revolvers chambered for that cartridge. US government arsenals supplied .45 Schofield cartridges for the Schofield revolver and the Colt Army revolver to simplify their armament needs. 45 Colt cartridges cannot be used in .45 Schofield firearms, since the .45 Colt is a longer cartridge.

This cartridge was originally designed as a black powder round. It was patented in the USA on 20 June 1871 and 22 April 1873 by Smith & Wesson. It was a Smith & Wesson Model 3 that was modified, due to a suggestion by Major George Schofield, to make it easier for a cavalryman to reload while riding. While the Colt 45 had more power, the speed at which a cavalryman could reload a Schofield was less than 30 seconds, half of the time for a Colt 45. By 1879, the U. S. Army had purchased 8,285 of the revolvers. Due to its reduced power and recoil compared to the Colt .45, it was easier to shoot accurately, yet still retained effective stopping power on the battlefield. It became the standard cartridge of the Army, though the Colt 1873 still was the main issue side arm of the Army.

The Schofield was quite a popular handgun in the old west, and may have been used by General Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The effectiveness of the cartridge in battle, and its reputation for shootability and accuracy, led to the duplication of the cartridges’ characteristics in the .45 ACP.

In the early 1880s the Benet (inside) cartridge primer was retired and the modern Boxer type (externally visible) primer was adopted for all future military production of revolver ammunition.

Our coated bullets have become such a hit with our “Cowboy Choice” line, we decided to introduce these tremendously popular bullets into our “Range Choice” lines of ammunition! • .454 Casull 240 Grain Hornady XTP- The .454 Casull (/kə’sul/) is a firearm cartridge, developed as a wildcat cartridge in 1957 by Dick Casull and Jack Fullmer. It was first announced in November 1959 by Guns & Ammo magazine. The basic design was a lengthened and structurally improved .45 Colt case. The wildcat cartridge finally went mainstream in 1997, when Ruger began chambering its Super Redhawk in this caliber. Taurus followed with the Raging Bull model in 1998 and the Taurus Raging Judge Magnum in 2010. The .45 Schofield and .45 Colt cartridges can fit into the .454’s chambers, but not the other way around because of the lengthened case (very similar to the relationship between .38 Special and .357 Magnum cartridges as well as the .44 Special and .44 Magnum cartridges.

The round is one of the most powerful handgun cartridges in production. The .454 Casull generates almost 5 times the recoil of the .45 Colt, and about 75% more recoil energy than the .44 Magnum. The .454 Casull round is primarily intended for hunting medium or large game, metallic silhouette shooting, and bear protection.

Choice Ammunition, and our 100% Hand-Loading techniques- produce a round of ammunition for the .454 Casull that is demanded in big game, dangerous game and defense applications. Accuracy, consistency and dependability are crucial at that final moments of such an endeavor.

    The Bullet~

Hornady XTP bullets were designed for hunting, self-defense, and law enforcement. One of the great things about the XTP bullet is reliable performance, it features controlled expansion where six serrations divide the bullet into six symmetrical sections. These sections weaken the jacket to allow controlled expansion at low velocities and ensures fragmentation does not occur at high velocities. The XTP bullet is really known for its stopping power. They were designed from the beginning to expand reliably at a variety of handgun velocities and deliver deep, terminal penetration with every shot. Most handgun bullets are designed to perform at a single factory-specified velocity where the XTP bullet is designed to offer controlled expansion over a range of velocities.

Each XTP Bullet has a swaged core and drawn copper jacket to ensure uniform expansion and in-flight stability. Adding a cannelure to this bullet keeps the core and the jacket locked together while also allowing the cartridge case to tightly crimp, adding security at high velocities.

  • .460 Smith & Wesson Magnum 275 Grain Barnes XPB (Lead Free)- The .460 S&W round is a lengthened, more powerful version of the popular .454 Casull, itself a longer and more powerful version of the .45 Colt. For this reason, the .460 S&W Magnum could be considered an example of a “super magnum”. Consequently, firearms that fire .460 S&W are usually capable of firing the less powerful .454 Casull, .45 Colt and .45 Schofield rounds, but this must be verified with each firearm’s manufacturer. For instance, some lever-action firearms are designed to handle cartridges within a certain length and bullet profile range. The reverse, however, does not apply: .45 Schofield, .45 Colt and .454 Casull handguns generally cannot safely fire .460 S&W rounds—nor can they even chamber the .460 S&W because of the longer case length. It is also the most versatile big bore revolver being able to fire four standardized cartridges, as well as lesser known rimmed and straightwall cartridges of .45 caliber that predate the .45 Colt. The .460 Smith and Wesson Magnum is built to handle both long-range hunting and Dangerous Game hunting and defensive performance.

The .460 cartridge achieves high velocities by operating at chamber pressures (65,000 psi max) normally reserved for magnum rifle cartridges. The recoil when shooting .45 Colt ammunition out of the S&W .460 firearm is comparable to recoil from a 9mm or .380 load, due to the weight of the gun and lower chamber pressures. On the contrary, when loaded with .460 S&W Magnum cartridges utilizing 300 grain bullets, the recoil is more likely to feel like “three times” that of what a .44 Magnum‘s recoil would be!

  • .500 Smith & Wesson Magnum 300 Grain Hornady FTX- The .500 S&W Magnum is a .50 caliber semi-rimmed revolver cartridge developed by Cor-Bon in partnership with the Smith & Wesson “X-Gun” engineering team for use in the Smith & Wesson Model 500 X-frame revolver and introduced in February 2003 at the SHOT Show. It has two primary design purposes: as a hunting handgun cartridge capable of taking all North American game species, and to be the most powerful production handgun cartridge to date. To put the cartridge’s extreme level of power into perspective; the muzzle energy of a .500 S&W bullet fired from a typical commercial loading of the round is roughly equivalent to that of a 16 pound bowling ball traveling at a speed of over 70 mph.

Smith & Wesson had been at the forefront when developing powerful handgun cartridges such as the .357 S&W Magnum and the .44 Remington Magnum. However, since 1960 the company’s .44 Remington Magnum, which it had developed in partnership with Remington, was eclipsed by the .454 Casull.

The .500 S&W Magnum was originally designed to be primarily a handgun hunting cartridge. The creation of Big Horn Armory’s Model 89 lever action rifle has changed it to a serious big game hunting rifle cartridge. In that platform, the cartridge is capable of taking any animal on earth. It also serves a secondary purpose as a back-up survival handgun cartridge as a defense against the large bears of North America.

The .500 S&W Magnum’s success with large, dangerous game is in part due to the availability of heavier bullets with exceptional sectional densities. Bullets above 500-grain (32 g) have the sectional densities required for hunting heavier African dangerous game. As a hunting cartridge the .500 S&W Magnum has been found to be effective against elephant and African buffalo as long as ranges are kept within reasonable limits. Bullet selection is extremely important when hunting thick-skinned dangerous game. Smith & Wesson bills the Model 500 revolver as “A Hunting Handgun For Any Game Animal Walking”. Big Horn Armory bills its Model 89 rifle as the most powerful lever gun currently made.

In North America, it serves the purpose of hunting all North American big game species. The cartridge has had success in taking Alaskan brown bear, American bison, moose, and elk. It is also used to hunt black bear, whitetail deer, wild boar, and feral hogs.[17] The cartridge gained some notoriety as being the cartridge which was used to hunt the supposed Monster Pig.

Hornady FTX bullets revolutionized lever gun ballistics, creating a new level of performance for these popular firearms. Lever gun enthusiasts can now harness the accuracy, power and long-range performance of a tipped bullet that’s safe to load in tubular magazines.
Hornady offers the same Flex Tip technology for handguns that revolutionized lever guns. Typical hollow point pistol bullets deliver good performance at modest velocities, but have a tendency to expand too quickly and sacrifice penetration at the higher velocities achieved with lever action guns.

Choice Ammunition, and our 100% Hand-Loading techniques- produce a round of ammunition for the .500 Smith & Wesson that is demanded for long-range pistol, big game and dangerous game hunting.

With the tightest loading tolerances in the industry through our proprietary formulas and 100% hand-loading techniques- this round of ammunition is designed for superior accuracy, reliability and consistency when you shoot them over ANY other factory produced round on the market. The XTP Bullets are designed for hunting, self-defense and law enforcement applications, and demonstrates the kind of accuracy that led many competitive shooters to adopt it. • 10mm 180 Grain Hi-Tek Coated TCFP- The 10mm Auto (10×25mm) is a powerful semi-automatic pistol cartridge first developed by American Jeff Cooper and introduced in 1983 with the Bren Ten pistol.

Although it was selected for service by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1989 from the aftermath of the 1986 FBI Miami shootout, the cartridge was later decommissioned (except by the Hostage Rescue Team and Special Weapons and Tactics Teams) after their Firearms Training Unit eventually concluded that its recoil was excessive in terms of training for average agents and police officers’ competency of use and qualification, and that the pistols chambered for the cartridge were too large for some small-handed individuals.

These issues led to the creation of and following replacement by a shorter version of the 10mm that exists today as the .40 S&W, and while the 10mm never attained the mainstream success of this compact variant, there is still an enthusiastic group of supporters and users.

At full potential, the 10mm Auto produces energy slightly higher than an average .357 Magnum load and below standard .41 Magnum rounds. The cartridge is considered to be high-velocity, giving it a less-curved flight path upon firing (also termed “flat-shooting”) relative to other handgun cartridges. In its lighter loadings, the 10mm Auto is an exact duplicate of the .40 S&W cartridge. More powerful loadings can equal or exceed the performance of the .357 Magnum, and retain more kinetic energy at 100 yards than the .45 ACP has at the muzzle.

The 10mm outperforms the .40 S&W by 270–300 ft/s (82–91 m/s) for similar bullet weights when using available full power loads, as opposed to the “10mm FBI” level loads still found in some ammunition catalogs. This result is due to the 10mm Auto’s higher SAAMI pressure rating of 37,500 psi (259 MPa), as opposed to 35,000 psi (240 MPa) for the .40 S&W, and the larger case capacity, which allows the use of heavier bullets and more smokeless powder. The 10mm Auto is marketed for hunting, defensive, and tactical use and is one of the few semi-automatic, rimless cartridges that is legal for hunting white-tailed deer in many U.S. states. The round makes the “Major” power factor ranking in the International Practical Shooting Confederation, even in lighter loadings.

We strive to be price competitive and provide the best performing round available. This 180 grain plated range ammunition provides enjoyable range or practice time for  shooting enthusiasts with a desire to hit what they are aiming at! Question: What is the difference between Plated/Jacketed/Cast bullets?
    • Our bullets begin as a swaged lead core. The plating process works through electrolysis as the lead cores are tumbled in an electrically charged bath containing high-grade copper ingots. The copper clings to the lead and the longer the bullets remain in the bath, the thicker the plating. Our bullets are plated to the correct size and then taken out of the bath.
    • Jacketed bullets start with a copper cup, which is “drawn up” into the form of a jacket. Lead is then swaged into the jacket.
Question: How thick is the “jacket” on your bullets?
    • Depending upon the caliber, the thickness of the plating on our bullets, ranges from 3.5 up to 8 thousandths of an inch of plating on each side. This is thicker than paper and ensures no lead in your bore. The bullets designed for higher velocities (45-70, 500 S&W etc.) have the thickest plating.

  • 44-40 WCF 200 Grain RNFP BLACK Hi-Tek Coated Lead Range Ammunition- The .44 WCF, also known as  .44-40 Winchester, .44 Winchester,  (Winchester Center Fire), was introduced in 1873 by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. It was the first metallic centerfire cartridge manufactured by Winchester, and was promoted as the standard chambering for the new Winchester Model 1873 rifle. As both a rifle and a handgun caliber, the cartridge soon became widely popular, so much so that the Winchester Model 1873 rifle became known as “The gun that won the West.”

When Winchester released the new cartridge, many other firearm companies chambered their guns in the new round. Remington and Marlin released their own rifles and pistols which chambered the round, Colt offered an alternative chambering in its popular Single Action Army revolver in a model known as the Colt Frontier Six-Shooter, and Smith & Wesson began releasing their Smith & Wesson New Model 3 chambered in .44-40. Settlers, lawmen, and cowboys appreciated the convenience of being able to carry a single caliber of ammunition which they could fire in both pistol and rifle. In both law enforcement and hunting usage the .44-40 became the most popular cartridge in the United States and to this day has the reputation of killing more deer than any other save the .30-30 Winchester.

The cartridge was originally sold as .44 Winchester. When the Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (U.M.C.) began selling their own version of the cartridge, it adopted the name .44-40 (shorthand for .44 caliber and the standard load at the time of 40 grains (2.6 g) of black powder), as it did not want to offer free advertising for one of its competitors. Over time the name stuck, and eventually Winchester adopted the .44-40 designation for the round after World War II. Winchester uses the designation 44-40 Winchester on packaging.

Over the years, this was considered an obsolete cartridge with with higher performance calibers and chamberings being developed. With the advent and ever growing popularity of Cowboy Action Shooting, the original 44-40 cartridge has once again began production for use in original 1866 and 1873 Winchester lever action rifles and in imported reproductions.

Easily one of the most popular categories of handguns for Defense concealed carry — if not the most popular — is the 9mm single stack. The role of 9mm Luger started in World War I and its continued popularity today testifies to its capabilities as an effective and efficient handgun cartridge.

It makes a lot of sense: It’s light, slim, easy to control, is quicker to reload than a .38 snub nose, and offers more punch than a comparatively sized .380 pocket pistol. Self-defense is crucial for anyone and this is the reason you find many people today having a licensed firearm with them. They can always take action when the time comes to defend themselves.

The rule about having such a gun is that it has to be concealed and many find the 9mm to be the ideal for these reasons. The 9mm is a weapon that provides a good balance between ease of firing and stopping power. It is a lightweight pistol that has moderate recoil with less chance of over penetration.

Choice Ammunition takes our role very seriously when we manufacture our hand-loaded rounds for the 9mm. Reliable and consistent practice ammunition leads to confidence and efficiency should the time ever come to protect yourself or loved ones, or property.

    Product Features:

    • CONTROLLED EXPANSION
    • Precise serrations divide the XTP into symmetrical sections, strategically weakening the jacket and initiating controlled expansion even at low velocities.
    • NO EXPOSED LEAD
    • The gilding metal jacket protects the nose of the bullet, so the hollow cavity functions properly on impact and ensures proper feeding in semi-automatics.
    • SWAGED CORE
    • Total uniformity of core density ensures balanced expansion as well as in-flight stability.
    • DRAWN GILDING METAL JACKET
    • Expansion is controlled by varying jacket thickness down the length of the XTP, providing a definite advantage over plated bullets which have a uniform jacket thickness over the entire bullet.

These high-performance rounds provide excellent reliability, consistency, accuracy, penetration and stopping power for personal protection.

  • 9mm Luger +P 148 Grain Hard Cast Flat Nose–  A perfect Bear Defense load? Probably not, but this round will be the best you can find for a bear defense situation when you carry a 9mm.

“It’s a miracle this Alaskan fishing guide lived to tell the tale.”

Phil Shoemaker, an experienced Alaskan hunting and fishing guide, was guiding a couple of clients on a salmon fishing trip in the Becharof National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Alaska when they had a close range encounter with an angry bear. Fortunately for everyone involved, Phil stopped the raging brown bear with a 9mm pistol at close range. Phil and his two clients walked away from the incident without a scratch.

Gun enthusiasts will likely debate the merits of his decision to carry a S&W 3954 handgun in 9mm for defense for years to come, especially considering the fact that he also owned a S&W 629 chambered in .44 Magnum but chose not to carry it. Regardless of what you think of his decision, this episode shows that with good ammunition, good shot placement, and a little luck, it is possible to stop a bear with a 9mm pistol, even though it is not known as a great cartridge for a bear defense gun.-wideopenspaces

In 2014, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released a report detailing the potential combat effectiveness of the 9mm cartridge when compared to other calibers such as the .45 ACP and the .40 S&W cartridge that was specifically developed for use by the FBI. The report indicated that the new powders and more advanced bullet designs used in current 9mm defensive loads allowed for the caliber to deliver almost similar performance to other calibers, like the .45 ACP and .40 S&W. In addition to this, the lower recoil, less wear, cheaper ammunition and higher capacity were all reasons that the report cited for the recent surge in orders of the ammunition from various police agencies. With a wider selection of officers being able to shoot handguns chambered in 9×19mm, many departments choose this caliber so they can standardize around a single firearm and loading, making logistics and supply easier. Due to all of these factors, law enforcement orders of 9mm ammo from all major ammunition manufacturers have spiked significantly.

The FBI report made it clear that the more consistent accuracy of 9mm in the hands of their less experienced shooters was a factor in their returning to 9mm as their standard handgun caliber. It was also made clear that the almost same effectiveness of 9mm compared to .40 S&W and .45 ACP was due to the high quality of 9mm ammunition available.
